Not Just A Name...
Perched on a Hanover corner, The Constant Service is named for something Brighton once prized almost as much as a good pint: a reliable water supply.
In the 1850s, the Brighton, Hove & Preston Constant Service water company was set up to bring a constant flow of clean water to a fast-growing town.
Not long after, this building started life as a local beerhouse (from around 1871), and by about 1880 landlord James Attrill had renamed it to salute the waterworks company that owned the covered reservoir just across the road — a big Victorian piece of hidden infrastructure still tucked into the neighbourhood today.
So yes: the name’s not a marketing slogan. It’s a nod to the engineers and pipe-layers who helped keep Brighton going — then and now we do our bit for “constant service” too, one well-poured drink at a time.
